The BMW 319/1 Roadster marked the transition of the German brand from budget cars to sports cars. In total, only 178 of these convertibles were produced.

In Munich, a 1936 BMW 319/1 Roadster was auctioned by RM Sotheby’s. The car is very rare and is considered the first sports model of the German brand, therefore it is very expensive – it is estimated at 150-200 thousand euros. The history of the car was told on the website of the auction house.

BMW was founded in Munich to produce aircraft and engines for them. After the end of the First World War, Germany was banned from having military aircraft and BMW retrained as a motorcycle manufacturer.

From the beginning of the 30s, BMW began to produce cars, and at first they were compact budget models. The first sports cars in the history of the brand are the BMW 315 and 319/1 roadsters, which differed from each other only in engines.

The more powerful BMW 319/1 is equipped with a 1.9-liter inline-six with 55 hp. With. and is capable of developing 130 km / h. In total, only 178 of these cars were assembled.

This particular BMW sports car was purchased in 1936 for 5,800 marks by a motorcycle dealer from Würzburg. After the war, the car ended up in the United States, but in 2012 it returned to Germany and became part of the BMW Museum in Munich.

Now part of this collection is for sale. Along with the 319/1, BMW’s only ever supercar was also auctioned off.
